Good Bye

I think that there is only one way to do this....

Final Blog Assignment

1. In EDM 310 I used many different technological tools that are going to be helpful to me as a teacher. I learned how to set up a blog account, how to do blog posts, how to do a google slideshow presentation, how to create a videocast, about the different types of podcasts, how to embed a YouTube video, how to make comments for kids and teachers, how to set up an iTunes, how to use iTunesU, and how to use Skype (you missed that one). I would have like to learn about Google Earth better, because I feel like I just wandered around in the dark with that program. In addition to this, I still don’t think twitter will be a tool that I will stick with.
2. As previously stated, I would have like to get a better understanding on Google Earth. I know there were a lot of videos and instructions; however I could not view them while I was creating my trip. I also would have liked to see more ways on how I could use twitter.
3. I wouldn’t go as far as to say that I wish I could “unlearn” anything in this class but I really found myself frustrated with the Google Earth. I was so frustrated with navigating the program and started to question myself “why am I doing this?”
4. There were a couple of assignments that excited me in this course. I really enjoyed getting feedback from my classmates on my writing. In addition to this, I loved viewing all of the comments4kids.
5. I would consider myself to be a decent writer, however the same could not be said about my grammatical usage. It has really been a challenge to make my work grammatically correct. I know this is pathetic being that I am going to be a teacher, but my grammar has defiantly seen better days. I always try to proof read my writing, but when I turn in a paper I get it back and my mistakes are kept private.
6. There were times in this class that I was bored. I am the type of person that doesn’t need detailed instruction and just likes to hear the main points. No offense, but Dr. Strange some of your instructional videos make me want to gouge my eyes out. I think that this could be improved by just stating what we need to do in the first thirty seconds of the videos.
7. I think that we should not have to write a blog the same week we have one of our main projects due. I think that our main project should be the focus of the week and throwing a blog assignment in there is a little over the top.
8. I think that I am technologically literate on a good level. The only reason I would not say that I am on the great level is because I think there is always room for improvement. I know there is still some areas where I am in the dark, as far a technology. For the most part, I think that I understand technology and I am comfortable using it.
9. There are several ways that I will maintain and improve my technology literacy in the next couple years. As technology advances I know that I will increase the usage and integration into my life. I already use my iphone, computer, internet, television, and radio on a daily basis. I think that I will increase my blogging and online journaling in the next couple of years.

Week 14 April 26

I watched a 7th graders video on her personal learning environment and i was a given a personal look at how she arranges it. She had her science class's blog, her email, Evernote, and Facebook. I also like to use Evernote, I think it is a great way to organize your schedule and different information. I am the type of person that has to have frequent reminders, everything in lists, and everything in one place which is why I use Evernote on my iphone and on the computer. In addition to this, the seventh grader in the video has a blog account that she checks daily, and I also have a couple of these.

Two Questions That Could Change My Life
If I had one sentence that described my life I would like it to be "she served God with everything she had". If that statement could be honestly said about myself then I believe everything else in my life would fall into place. If that sentence was could be true at the end of my life, I think that there would be so many other great achievements and contributions that I would have made in my lifetime.
I think it is important to ask yourself if you imporve on a daily basis. If you're not growing and learning daily than your life becomes meaningless. Self improvement is also a crucial part of living. To be able to evaluate your progress and better yourself is something I strive for.

TimeToast

For the Timetoast Timelines assignment I chose my daughter Rian as my topic. I have been meaning to get her scrapbook started and record all the major events in her life. Since I haven't tackled that yet, I had all of these random notes in my cell phone. Timetoast was a perfect way for me to organize all of the important events and milestones in her life thus far.

Survey

After sending a survey to many of my fellow students, I was able to get a grasp at the type of schedule they had this semester. The majority of my classmates were taking a work load of 15+ credits and the majority of Elementary Education majors were following the old program. Nearly all of my classmates had outside obligations in addition to school. These obligations were inclusive of: kids, work, church involvement, coaching, volunteering, babysitting, sports, animals, pregnancy, campus organizations, and relationships. The next question I asked was if this was their favorite class, and out of 53 students I only got one yes. After this, I asked my classmates if they had to teach a math lesson what would they prefer to teach it on a whiteboard, smartboard, or chalk board. The results showed that most students would like to use a smartboard or whiteboard, and only a couple of students would use a chalk board. Finally, my last question revealed that this was a very stressful semester for many students. Week 12 April 11

The preceding video is one of the comments for kids I was assigned to in EDM 310. I love hearing the sounds of children singing. I also enjoyed hearing a foreign song that I was familiar with sang. Thanks to blog posts and youtube I was able to actively participate as part of an audience to children in another part of the world.

Photobucket
During this Spring semester I visited Jonathan's(a student at Avoca West School)blog which described a book he had read. I, along with many others were able to read his book review because it had been posted online. Posting his book review online has many advantages, he was able to use spell check and virtually free his writing of errors, and he was also able to get feedback from many readers.
To view his report follow this link: http://avoca37.org/13jonathans/2010/01/05/al-capone-shines-my-shoes-book-review/comment-page-1/#comment-8

Finally, I think the greatest advantage of posting student's blogs was that I, as a student, was able to connect to other learners in different areas. Although my writing may not be error free, I know that it has greatly improved grammatically. In addition to this, nothing makes me feel happier than children and I loved seeing, hearing, and reading about what they were learning.

Week 11 April 4

I read Mr. Chamberlain's blog, watched Kaia's video summary, and read her father's blog. Going out to explore nature and using technology to capture the moment was a moving experience. At the age of three Kaia was able to demonstrate her knowledge on the material she just learned. This information was then shared with classrooms across the globe including Mr. Chamberlain's.
Although Kaia is a typical child, what occured to me while viewing her video summary was how an assignment such as this could be used for special needs students to demonstrate thier mastery of subject matter. If a child has trouble expressing themselves through their writing, Kaia gave an excellent example of an alternative assingment. She was able to show us what she learned, and how she learned it even though she is still illiterate.
In addition to this, I also enjoyed the way one child's experience has had such a large impact on many other children and even adults. Who would have guessed a three year old could stir up so much knowledge and incentive.

Week 10 March 28

Morgan Bayda, a teacher in Saskatchewan, describes her feelings and reaction to the video "An Open Letter to Education" by Dan Brown. She often felt cheated, frustrated, and un-encouraged in her education. Dan Brown describes his journey at the University of Nebraska, which eventually led to his decision to withdrawal from the university and education system altogether.
I would like to start by stating that I understand Brown's position, but dropping out is a large measure. Personally, no matter the frustrations of the education system I must march on! However, I don't know all of the details surrounding his situation and it may have been right for him.
In addition to this, I think Dan Brown made many valid points throughout his presentation. One's access to education has changed drastically throughout the years. Information can be found and the price if not free, is minimal. With all of this information, one would think that educators would use this to their advantage. Teachers should be using their resources and finding new and exciting ways to present information.
If all the teachers who taught because it was truly a passion of theirs, I think it would solve a lot of problems. First of all, all the teachers who are unemployed and willing to learn new things could have a position. In addition to this, all the teachers who made the education process miserable could do something they enjoyed.
In conclusion, along with Morgan Bayda, I was able to connect and relate to the video "An Open Letter to Education". I loved Brown's enthusiasm and powerful message.

Week 8 March 12

1. ALEX
ALEX is an acronym for Alabama Learning Exchange, it is a website with different links to things such as Alabama course of study, lesson plans, podcasts, and more. When you go to the lesson plans link, it allows you to choose from every subject, grade level, and objective. Once you have selected the information for the lesson plan, a bunch of different lesson plans show up. You are then given many different options for this lesson plan.
In addition to this, the podcast section of the website gives the user a list of subjects. Upon choosing a subject, the user is then shown the top podcasts for that subject. There are many different interviews, and lectures to choose from.
I believe that this would be a very useful tool when I begin teaching. One reason I feel this way, is because I have been worried about coming up with so many lesson plans. To just be able to go online and borrow a lesson plan is such a great tool. Along with this, I like the idea of being able to enrich my lesson plan by selecting a podcast that relates to the material.

2.ACCESS
ACCESS is an acronym for Alabama Connecting Classrooms, Educators, &Students Statewide. This website has many different resources such as Mathtype,Chemlab, Alabama Virtual Library, and Advanced Placement prep tests. ACCESS allows students to get the classroom experience from the comfort of their home. This allows many more students to receive an education that otherwise may be impossible.
In addition to this, it allows high school students to take at least one distant learning course during their high school years. It also gives students the opportunity to expand their education with a variety of electives. Access to these courses allows students to personalize their education to meet their goals.
I believe that this would be a useful tool because students are no longer limited to walls of the classroom. I personally, wanted to graduate high school early and I went through a lot of obstacles. My school didn't offer additional courses at times that would allow me to finish early. If I were able to use a tool such as ACCESS in high school, I would have been able to graduate early and get a head start on my college education.

As a student, I would hate to write essays to evaluate my knowledge. But as a future teacher, I think the layout you have is an excellent idea. Normally I do pretty well on writing assignments, but when I'm pressed for time I start to get frustrated and confused at what direction my writing should take. Your idea of having a layout where the students know how many main ideas and supporting details to have is a great way to organize one's writing. I think it also makes the whole writing and essay process a whole lot easier.
Oh, and I will be revisiting your blog for the next 3 weeks as part of my assingment for my EDM 310 class. Here's a link to my blog: http://foxstacyedm310.blogspot.com/

Week 7 March 7

Randy Pausch described several teaching methods he used throughout his career. I really enjoyed the video and I found that he was a very agreeable person.
One of which he stated was to have students think they are learning something else. He said that he would have million of students having fun while learning something hard.Alice The Infinitely Scalable Dream Factory, was a great way to teach students to program computers while they just think they are making videos and movies.
He also described that when he was younger and played football he had a coach who "rode him a whole practice". The assistant teacher later approached him and commented that, it was only because he had faith him. you should only worry when you are doing something wrong and no one corrects you. This would mean that they had given up on you.
Since the program he taught was a double masters program, he said there was no books. By the time they had reached him, they probably read every book in the library. Learning in this program, was all hands on. I think this is really neat because it is hard for me to learn something if I can manipulate it and physically put my hands on it.
Finally, I think the best thing he said was that you should never loose the child like wonder. I think the basis of his teaching philosophy would be that if you're not having fun it's not being taught properly. I say this because, I think the root of who Randy is would be a joyous and fun person, and he applies this to his teaching.

Week 6 Feb. 21

1. While exploring Dr. Alice Christie's website, there were many things that captivated my attention. Being an art lover, her photography was my favorite section of her site. Tulips, farmers market, birds, and wildlife are all images that Dr.Christie photographs. Her photographs are filled with brilliant colors and are focally soft.
There are many ways in which an educator could use Dr.Christie's site for educational purposes. For example, if I were teaching a biology lesson I might incorporate the photographs of tulips to depict the different segments of a flower. This is a way to integrate both art and technology into the classroom.

2. iTunes University is a way in which universities are able to upload audio and video content for their students to watch. They can also watch uploads from univerities such as Yale, Stanford, and Berkeley. Students are then able to download these item for later use.
iTunes University would be a great tool that is excessible to many students like myself and it could be used for enrichement as well. According to blooms taxonomy of higher education, knowledge is the most basic type of learning. Instruments such as iTunes University could provide students with information that could allow them to actually understand the content. When we are later evaluated the information would be retained.

3. Technological tools such as the ipod have found themselves in the hands of teachers and in classrooms around the globe. There are many uses and ways to integrate this technology into the classroom. According to Susie Meserve author of iPods in the Classroom, "In first grade, students are listening to their reading at their own pace then retelling the story using the voice recorder." http://www.schoolcio.com/ShowArticle/1014
When Duke University coducted an experiment distributing 1600 20GB Apple iPods equiped with Belkin Voice Recorder technology to incoming freshmen the findings were astounding. "Audio-intense courses reported that the iPod increased the frequency and depth of student interaction with audio course content through portible and flexible access offered by the iPod"(duke.edu). Finding such as this were very common throughout the experiment and it makes me wish I had an iPod.http://cit.duke.edu/pdf/reports/ipod_initiative_04_05.pdf

Week 5 Feb. 14

Wikipedia, the encyclopedia anyone can edit, is both its greatest strength and greatest weakness. the editor of the article can be identified by the IP address from which it was edited. This effects the reliability of Wikipedia, because a person with no knowledge on a subject can post information as factual or even a bias corporate owner can enter information in which it favors his company. However, this can be a good thing because an article is constantly being revised and revisited. In the case that one was able to see where the editions were coming from, this would allow the reader to know whether the alterations were bias or even credible.

What I've Learned This Year
Mr.Clung's article describes different things that are important to the education process. First of all, one should "read the crowd". The students should be the focus of the lesson and should be developed to best fit that group. Next, the teacher should "be flexible". Things will not always get done in the manner that they were antisipated and stressing over it won't make things better. "Communicate" to the students to allow a strong teacher student relationship. "Be reasonable"- set high standard but be understanding when the students fall short. Those are a couple of the important things to remember while teaching.

Week 4 Feb. 7

For the assignment I chose"Integrating ICT into the MFL classroom: The benefits of podcasting in the classroom", as the tool to aid me into the creation of my own podcast. This website provided a video podcast with a lot of useful information.
For example, in the film they created a scenario in which a child is sick and they were able to view their study guide from the comfort of their home. In addition to this, it explained how podcasts fits into Blooms Taxonomy and encourages higher level thinking. I also agreed with how they stated that it encourages creativity. I have seen so many different approaches to podcasting and I still don't know which approach I will chose.
In addition to this, I agree that the process is easily learned and proves to be a very helpful tool. Although not all children have computer and Internet access, it still is a great idea to make the links available.

Week 3

I began this week by listening to the assigned podcasts provided by itunes. I have to admit this was initially a frustrating experience, being new to itunes and my new computer. After navigating around the program, I was then able to understand how itunes could be used as a powerful teaching instrument.
First of all, I listened to "SMARTboard lessons" podcasts with Ben Hazzard. From listening to this podcast, I hypothesized that this was done through a small microphone. The audio isn't amazing and sounds as though it is being held close to his mouth via headset. When Hazzard made an order through the drive through, it sounded as though he was still talking into the microphone, which again takes me back to my hypothesis that he's wearing a headset or bluetooth.
Next, I listened to KidCast "Some thoughts on Video Podcasting". From the title and the content of the podcast, I was able to conclude that this podcast was actually done via video podcasting. The clarity of the audio also contributed to the idea that this podcast was done through a video and then the audio was downloaded.
Then, I listened to David Warlick's "Connect Learning"- episode 90. I believe to create this episode, Warlick passed around a microphone to his crowd . He also had a microphone he was talking into the entire time.
In addition to this, I listened to "Ed Tech Talk". This podcast was in the form of a conversation between two people. It sounded as though, they were each talking into something different. By this I mean, that each person had their own computer and was conversing online through a medium.
Along with this, I listened to "MacBreak Weekly" with Leo Laporte and Alex Lindsay. From the start of this podcast, it sounded as though it was done in a much more professional manner. The equipment and quality is impeccable. I think they used square space, go to meeting, and audible.com, because these are the sponsors they acknowledged in the beginning of the podcast.
Finally, I feel like the podcast "This Week In Photography" was also done through a video podcast. However, it kind of sounds like it was done in the same fashion as a radio show. After further listening, I am going to settle on the radio show idea. The way in which they mention there sponsors rather then just showing something through a video tells me that this is just like a radio show.

Week 2

1. Michael Wesch: A Vision of Students Today
I found Michael Wesch's video "A Vision Of Students Today" to be so very accurate that it actually made me laugh. Things such as, "I buy hundred dollar text books that I never open", "I will be $20,000 dollars in dept after graduation" and "I'm a multi-tasker, I have to be" are the details of my life.

Last semester, I got a 3.5 and I sold back all of my text books for thirty percent of what I paid for them. I believe that's the reality for myself and many of my fellow classmates. In addition to this, I qualify for financial aid but it doesn't quite pay the bills like my loans do. I'm already at least $14,000 in dept but hey, what's another six grand or so right? As for being a multi-tasker, how about writing a blog for class, bouncing the babies chair with my foot, chatting to my friends on facebook, texting my mom, and eating dinner; that would be my life at the moment.

If I were to be holding one of the signs in the film, there would be many things mine might say. "I could have wrapped up the entire lecture in two sentences", "I'm here by choice, please teach like you are as well","Believe it or not I have obligations outside of school" are all examples of what I might contribute to the video.

2. Read the post "It's Not About the Technology" by Kelly Hines
Kelly Hines writes about the importance of having teachers who are willing to learn in her blog entitled "It's Not About the Technology". She recognizes the importance of technology in the classroom but argues against this being the focal point of teachers. Preparation of the teachers and well rounded learners is what Hines feel are some more important aspects of teaching.

There are several reasons why I would have to agree with Hines that technology is an important tool in the classroom but not the most important tool. Slide shows and gadgets aren't effective if the instructor doesn't know how to correctly implement them into the learning experience. If all the future educators are only taught how to use technology to teach, I would hate to be that teacher during a thunderstorm. I think that one should rely on their skills of teaching and use technology as an aid not a necessity.

3. Karl Fisch: Is It Okay to Be A Technologically Illiterate Teacher?
I found Karl Fisch's blog to be sort of scattered and it was as if he couldn't quite gather his thoughts. In addition to this, I didn't fully agree with everything he stated and I felt as though he was a little over the top. "If a teacher today is not technologically literate- and is unwilling to make the effort to learn more- it's equivalent to a teacher 30 years ago who didn't know how to read and write." Fisch asks for the readers comments on the preceding quote. Well, I think we both should be able to agree that this is a little bit of a stretch. A teachers primary job 30 years ago was to teach children to read and write, this is still probably the number one expectation of a teacher. Teaching kids how to use technology wouldn't be a teachers first priority, so they aren't equivocal.

On the contrary, I feel as if Fisch did make many valid points. There are so many people and even teachers that are proud of their ignorance. It should not be socially acceptable to not be able to get around in the world using basic technology. Even this very semester, I have a teacher who has no idea how to use the smart board in her classroom and would rather use the whiteboard. She continuously points out how technologically illiterate she is. I can see how myself and my fellow classmates are often astonished and annoyed with this. What's even more frustrating is how she still hasn't managed to work the computer and class has been in session for awhile now.

Social Media Counts
I think it is astounding at the rate things are happening. It is also crazy to thing that I am contributing to all of it. As a future teacher, this means that my students will most likely have Internet access and instant communication. This can mean more drama on the playground. Not only will students have to deal with bullying face to face, they may also experience some of it via social networking. However, this also means students will have access to many sources and there research will greatly benefit. But, only time will truly tell how technology will advance and change the education of our future generation.

Week 1

1. Did You Know? 3.0 and Mr. Winkle Wakes
After watching the YouTube film entitled "Did You Know?", I found that there was many facts and figures I had never truly put into perspective. For example, "India has more honor kids, then America has kids". This fact at first seems alarming and may seem as though India student are overwhelmingly smart, which may be true however it really means India has a very large population to contribute to the academic achievements.

In addition to the other intriguing facts, "I found that today's learners will have 10-14 jobs before the age of 38." This statistic makes me laugh because one year I had 7 jobs, trying doing taxes for that! So far I have worked 12 jobs and I am only 20. However, you should keep in mind that I often worked two jobs at a time and move frequently. So, I honestly feel like this number estimate is even lower than actuality. In conclusion, I found the film to be very enlightening overall.

Along with the previous film, I watched "Mr. Winkel Wakes", an animated piece that depicts the journey a man goes through after finding himself awake 100 years later. Initially, I thought it was a little weird and then it got towards the end and I understood the point they were trying to convey.

Mr. Winkel went through the town and saw how things had changed as time elapsed. There were machines, computers, and big hospitals; All of which astounded Mr. Winkel. When the character finally makes it to a classroom he finds everything to be just how he remembered it. I believe this to be a little embellished, but I understand what they were getting at. Technology can be found all across the town but it hasn't made a large impact in the fashion in which children are taught.

2. Sir Ken Robinson: The Importance of Creativity
Sir Ken Robinson's speech on "The Importance of Creativity", was not only filled with humor but a lot of important information. My two favorite stories he told was how Shakespeare was even once a child, and the girl drawing God.

I believe that we tend to forget that every genius, surgeon, and engineer was first a student and a child. Even Shakespeare was taught to read at one point, and educators aren't given nearly enough credit. Maybe we should praise or even thank the ones who encourage and inspire the genius for once.

I also loved the story about the child that sat in the back of the classroom drawing during an art lesson. When the teacher inquired about what she was drawing she stated that it was God. The teacher then informed the child that no one knows what God looks like, and the child cleverly replied that they would in a minute. I loved this story because there is nothing I admire more than the wit and cleverness of a child. It's when they make statements such as that without being a smart alack and just as innocent as can be. Which is the reason I'm choosing to spend my days around the positive energy of children.

In conclusion, Mr. Robinson's speech was filled with many good points and stories. I enjoyed the two in particular for the reasons previously stated. Creativity is so important and vital to the growth and development of children.

3. Vicki Davis: Harness Your Students' Digital Smarts
Vicki Davis's video "Harness Your Students' Digital Smarts" told the tale of how Mrs.Davis as an educator was able to use the electronic interests of her students and allow it to form into a teaching tool. She saw the window of opportunity and the interests of her students and combined this to capture the attention of her class.

Personally, I would have to agree that the techniques she was using seemed to be working. While watching the video, all I could think about was how I wished I had classes like that when I was in school. Being fairly young, this tells me that most students would feel the same way. There has been so many times where I have just been burnt out on the lecture and craving for some other way to learn.

Honestly, I can't tell you what I learned from hardly any lectures in high school but I could tell you what I got out of activities where I was engaged with assignment. I believe that if teachers focused on how to best convey the knowledge to the students and not the most convenient way, learning would be a lot more fun and it might actually even occur.
